Back2back: Anthony Frost and his father Sir Terry Frost at the Brook

[The bright and sparky people at Budleigh Salterton's Brook Gallery are preparing for another of their shows later this month which promises to be a special occasion. Or rather, two shows on one theme. This is what they say about them:]

It’s an honour for an independent gallery to announce an exhibition of work by Sir Terry Frost RA, one of the world’s most celebrated and acclaimed British abstract artists, but this Spring the Brook goes one step further.

Working with the Estate of Sir Terry Frost, the Brook are today announcing BACK2BACK; two exhibitions running literally back to back, starting with renowned abstract artist Anthony Frost and then followed by his father, Sir Terry Frost.

The connection between father and son runs deep. Their shared love of colour and form is obvious yet there’s more to it. The work of these highly regarded artists provokes a feeling of optimism and leaves one feeling alive, an innate skill that’s been passed from father to son.

These very special works reflect the joy in their creation and, with a shared passion for the printed form, Anthony and his father Sir Terry Frost provide a vivid and energetic exhibition which leaves one with a complete sense of well-being.

Sir Terry Frost RA enjoyed a prolific career spanning more than five decades and enjoyed international standing throughout.

He moved permanently to Cornwall where his love of the region proved a source of inspiration.

Born in St Ives, his son Anthony Frost inherited his father’s love of colour and collage and has forged his own incredibly successful career.

Anthony studied at the Cardiff College of Art. Since then he has lectured at Falmouth School of Art, Canterbury School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University, the University of East London and exhibited his work at numerous major galleries, including the Tate St Ives.

Anthony has his own distinctive style and unique methods in producing his own work with vivid and strident shapes yet the same inherent joy at its heart.

This shared passion in print by both artists, is celebrated throughout this six-week exhibition.

Captured in Crete in 1941 during WWII, Sir Terry Frost famously found his love and enthusiasm for form and colour as a prisoner of war. He eventually returned to find England ravaged by war but people eager for vibrancy and joy. As life in post-war Britain continued and contrasted with the flourishing of abstract art, Sir Terry studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, where his enthusiasm for painting and printmaking thrived. He attended the St Ives school of Art and worked as an assistant to sculptor Dame Barbara Hepworth, as well as many other noteworthy positions.

Throughout this time he became recognised as a leading light in the art scene nationally and internationally, experimenting and fine-tuning his interest and skills in producing abstract work combined with his teaching and lecturing.

He eventually became Professor of Painting at the University of Reading. He enjoyed one-man shows in London and New York in the late 1950s and early 1960s with work held in public and private collections throughout his career.

Elected a Royal Academician in 1992, Sir Terry was knighted in 1998.

The exhibition ties in with the release of the much awaited catalogue raisonné celebrating the prints of Sir Terry Frost by Dominic Kemp.

Published by Lund Humphries, this is a colourful visual history of Frost’s remarkable printmaking career and the only complete catalogue of the artist’s prints.
