Concert at the Temple Methodist Church




















As imposing in its way as the parish church of St Peter's Budleigh Salterton's Temple Methodist church on Fore Street with its excellent acoustics is well-known as a venue for many of the concerts staged during the town's Music Festival.

It's also a notable landmark with a 'rags to riches' story, being built on the site of the Methodist chapel originally founded by a notable Budleigh character, the 18th century bookseller James Lackington as I mentioned at http://budleighbrewsterunited.blogspot.com/2009/08/temple-is-apt-setting-for-literary.html

So the concert this Saturday 13 November 2010 in aid of the Temple Methodist Refurbishment Fund will no doubt be a sell-out, featuring as it does the town's Male Voice Choir http://www.budleighmvc.co.uk/ and one of Britain's top clarinetists. Among the songs being performed are 'Any Dream Will Do', 'Some Enchanted Evening,' 'Portrait of My Love,' 'The Rose', 'You Don't Have to Say You Love Me', 'Jacob's Ladder' and many other male voice choir favourites.

Kevin Hurst, who lives in Budleigh, will be playing the adagio section from Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, and the ever popular 'Stranger on the Shore' made famous by Acker Bilk. His clarinet playing has taken him all over the UK and abroad, including Canada, France, Germany and the USA, but he presently restricts himself to giving mostly local recitals. Kevin Hurst will be accompanied on the piano by Kevin Stuart-Banks, who is currently directing and playing for a newly formed choir in Budleigh Salterton which has grown from an informal gathering of ladies who enjoy singing lighter, more popular music.

Tickets for the concert cost £6 and are available from Tourist Information Offices in Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Ottery St Mary, from Lesley's, High Street, Budleigh Salterton, and are also available on the door. The concert begins at 7.30 pm.

He is not listed on Budleigh Salterton’s War Memorial, yet his grave is in St Peter’s Burial Ground on Moor Lane. His family were not local, yet he seems to have been killed while engaged in the highly hazardous work of protecting Budleigh against invasion.   The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records him as a member of the 12 th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment with the Service Number was 5627659. According to the same source, his parents were George and M. People from the Past: 3. Reg Varney (1916-2008)

Reginald Alfred 'Reg' Varney was an English actor, most notable for his role as a cheerful Cockney bus driver in the 1970s TV sitcom On the Buses . For ten years he lived at Dark Lane House on picturesque Dark Lane in Budleigh Salterton, seen above.  Millions of television viewers remember him with affection. He has been described as belonging to the old school of comedians, with his dislike of much contemporary television and his pride in never using swear words to get a laugh. Varney was born on 11 July 1916 in Canning Town, which was then part of Essex but is now part of East London. His father worked in a rubber factory in Silvertown and he was one of five children who grew up in Addington Road, Canning Town. He was educated at the nearby Star Lane Primary School in West Ham and after leaving school at 14, he worked as a messenger boy at the Regent Palace Hotel, pictured above.

A home that Hatchard-Smith built: Lavender House

Lavender House, one of no less than 50 houses in Budleigh Salterton designed by Hatchard-Smith   Instantly recognisable with their red and white decoration and their front doors set within brick arches, the houses built by architect William Hatchard-Smith (1887-1987) are still sought after and appreciated by their owners for their elegance and comfort, their sturdy construction and their attention to practical detail.
