Artist Dorothy Bradshaw (1893-1983)
Dorothy Bradshaw's Fairlynch by Night
Like her fellow-artist Cecil Elgee and other
Budleigh residents associated with Fairlynch such as museum co-founder
Priscilla Hull, Dorothy Bradshaw was brought up in India, having been born in
Calcutta. Her work was highly esteemed
both internationally and in the local area: Budleigh Salterton’s Art Club has
both a Cecil Elgee Memorial prize and a Dorothy
Bradshaw Cup for Watercolour or Gouache.
She came from an artistic family. Her daughter Angela Stones
(1914-95) was also a talented artist and her grandson was the noted pastel painter
Christopher Assheton-Stones (1947-99).
Dorothy Bradshaw studied art under Jack
Merriott, the Polperro-based artist and poster designer
famous for his artworks produced for British Railways and the General Post
Office. She went
on to exhibit at the Chelsea Art Society and the Leighton House Museum in
London, the Royal Institution and the Society of Women Artists.
Otterton, by Dorothy Bradshaw
Some of her watercolours painted locally were offered for
sale by Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood in 2012: they included 'The Old Churchyard,
Topsham', 'Hayes Barton, East Budleigh', 'Woodbury Common', 'Cadhay Bridge, Ottery
St Mary' and 'Near the Car Park, Budleigh Salterton'.
Her ‘Fairlynch by Night’ is part
of the Museum’s collection. Copies
are now available as cards and are on sale at the Fairlynch shop: £1.50 each,
or £5.50 for a pack of four.
