‘Peace, man!’ – the message from East Budleigh’s Roger Conant Club

A dazzling display of Christmas trees was on show at the East Budleigh Heritage Centre in Salem Chapel on Saturday and Sunday 2-3 December 2023, from 10.00am-3.00pm.

‘We have a display of over 30 trees which look magnificent with all their lights!’ said organiser Maria Malinowska. ‘The trees are in all different shapes and sizes and many reflect the themes and interests of the groups who have decorated them. The tallest is 15’ high!

‘Contributions of Christmas Trees came from Drake’s School, All Saints’ Church, East Budleigh Parish Council, the Craft Group, the Sir Walter Raleigh pub, the WI, the Handbell Choir, the History Society, the Otter Valley Association, the Friends of All Saints, the Square Circle knitting group, the Flower Arrangers, the Bell Ringers, the East Budleigh Heritage Centre, East Budleigh in Bloom, the Roger Conant Club, the East Budleigh Community Shop, the Yoga group, the Churchyard Working Party, and the Prayer Group as well as some individuals!’

The East Budleigh event has attracted much interest across the Atlantic in Salem, Massachusetts, which will be celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2026. The town’s founder, East Budleigh-born Roger Conant, is highly respected in the US for his reputation as a peacemaker and for his friendship with Native Americans.

News of the ‘Peace Tree’ on display in Salem Chapel, presented by the village’s Roger Conant Club, has inspired Massachusetts residents to design their own version.

‘This sounds like a wonderful project, and it's so cool for our town to have a connection like this,’ the Club was told by Theo Burbank, Religious Education Coordinator at the First Church in Salem. ‘I love the idea of a peace tree, and I think it's something that our congregation could definitely get into—especially knowing that it has a sibling tree over in Budleigh.’

Salem Chapel has no connection with the American town that Conant founded. ‘Salem’, from the Hebrew word ‘shalom’, simply means ‘Peace’, similar to the Arabic greeting ‘salamun alaykum’ that means ‘Peace be upon you.’  The Chapel was built by Dissenters in 1719, with help from local landowner Richard Duke, a friend of the philosopher John Locke. 

Festive refreshments including mulled wine were available at the East Budleigh event, and ‘Salem Chapel in the Snow’ Christmas cards were on sale.

He is not listed on Budleigh Salterton’s War Memorial, yet his grave is in St Peter’s Burial Ground on Moor Lane. His family were not local, yet he seems to have been killed while engaged in the highly hazardous work of protecting Budleigh against invasion.   The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records him as a member of the 12 th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment with the Service Number was 5627659. According to the same source, his parents were George and M. Holloway, of Hounslow, Middlesex.   Tackling this WW2 project chronologically as I am, it was clear that Stanley had died on the same day as Private Clifto

People from the Past: 3. Reg Varney (1916-2008)

Reginald Alfred 'Reg' Varney was an English actor, most notable for his role as a cheerful Cockney bus driver in the 1970s TV sitcom On the Buses . For ten years he lived at Dark Lane House on picturesque Dark Lane in Budleigh Salterton, seen above.  Millions of television viewers remember him with affection. He has been described as belonging to the old school of comedians, with his dislike of much contemporary television and his pride in never using swear words to get a laugh. Varney was born on 11 July 1916 in Canning Town, which was then part of Essex but is now part of East London. His father worked in a rubber factory in Silvertown and he was one of five children who grew up in Addington Road, Canning Town. He was educated at the nearby Star Lane Primary School in West Ham and after leaving school at 14, he worked as a messenger boy at the Regent Palace Hotel, pictured above.

A home that Hatchard-Smith built: Lavender House

Lavender House, one of no less than 50 houses in Budleigh Salterton designed by Hatchard-Smith   Instantly recognisable with their red and white decoration and their front doors set within brick arches, the houses built by architect William Hatchard-Smith (1887-1987) are still sought after and appreciated by their owners for their elegance and comfort, their sturdy construction and their attention to practical detail. Plans for one of the houses designed by Hatchard-Smith Lavender House, on Moorlands Road , is a four-bedroomed detached family residence built by Hatchard-Smith in the late 1920s when it was originally named Lavenderhay.   Set within what are described as beautifully landscaped gardens of approximately an acre it has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment programme while retaining much of the original charm and character.
