Budleigh Past and Present

  Sir Walter RALEGH (c1552-1618) , courtier, explorer, poet, historian, polymath.  His connection with Budleigh Salterton is through the painting 'The Boyhood of Raleigh' by  Sir John Everett Millais Bt (1829-1896),  which depicts young Walter and his half-brother Humphrey Gilbert listening to a sailor's stories. * The story of Ralegh placing his cloak on a puddle for Queen Elizabeth was invented after his death. * Ralegh never visited North America, although the city of Raleigh in North Carolina is named after him. * The city of Raleigh has two exclusive districts named Budleigh and Hayes Barton – Ralegh’s birthplace in East Budleigh.    * In 1584 Ralegh wrote to the owner of Hayes Barton, Richard Duke, offering to buy the house.   Richard Cameron North PALAIRET (1871-1955).   Retired cricket administrator. He lived at ‘Min-y-Don’ also spelt ‘Min-y-Dan’, on Westbourne Terrace; later to ‘Knowle Croft’ in Knowle Village. Above is his photo by E Hawkins, Brighton, from a book  Famous Cricketers  (1896). *  He played first-class cricket for Oxford University and Somerset.  * Later appointments  included Secretary at Surrey County Cricket Club, and joint manager of the English cricket team in Australia in 1932-33 which became embroiled in the ‘Bodyline’ controversy. * In retirement at Budleigh he was Secretary of the East Devon Golf Club, being responsible for making changes to the course during the first 25 years of its existence.  * His  family name is of French Huguenot origin.  Cartographer and author Jean Palairet, born in 1697 at Montauban, near Toulouse, was forced into exile with his family and settled in The Hague before moving to England. * He was buried alo...

   Edith Ellen OSSORIO (1875-1970)   née Ramage .  Child model for the painting   ‘Cherry Ripe’ (1879), seen above.    * The building ‘Rock Mansions’, where she settled in the 1960s, is opposite ‘The Octagon’, which is where  Sir John Everett Millais Bt (1829-96)   worked on ‘The Boyhood of Raleigh’ in 1870.      Francis Ernest Newcombe (1910-41) * He was born at Payhembury, near Honiton, on 1 July 1910. * His parents were William John Newcombe (1880-1940), a journeyman blacksmith born in Cornwall, and Mary Anne Newcombe, (1883-1964) * His siblings were William John Newcombe (1905-1975), born at Newton Poppleford, later living at Knowle until his death on 17 August 1975; Charlie Newcombe (1907-1984), born at Newton Poppleford, later living at Otterton until his death; and Cecil Newcombe, born on 26 April 1913 * His wife was Edna Joan Newcombe, née Leatt, born on 20 Sept 1919. They lived at 24 Armytage Road.
