Edward William Paget THURSTAN, CMG, (1881-1947), diplomat, lived at Lansdowne House  37 Exmouth Road.

* He was involved in making the American authorities aware of the coded Zimmerman telegram in 1917, a crucial cause of the USA’s involvement in WW1.  The telegram, pictured above, was sent by German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann (1864-1940) to the President of Mexico proposing a military alliance against the United States. In return for Mexican support in the war, Germany would help Mexico regain New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona from the United States. The British intercepted the secret message, deciphered it, and turned it over to the US Government.

Christopher William TREMLETT (1936-2008) International boat designer and builder.  

* In 1961 he set up in business on the banks of the River Clyst, a tributary of the Exe, near Topsham.

* His obituary in The Times described him as a designer and builder whose innovative techniques brought the sport of powerboating within reach of ordinary mortals.

Thomas Adolphus TROLLOPE (1810-92). Author. Husband of Frances 'Fanny' Milton Trollope (1779-1863). She lived at 10 Cliff Terrace.  A blue plaque commemorates the Trollopes: Dr Brushfield now has his own blue plaque. 

* An elder brother of the better known writer Anthony Trollope (1815-1882), he produced between 1840 and 1890 some sixty volumes of travel writing, history and fiction, in addition to a large amount of periodical and journalistic work.

* He lived in Italy for most of his adult life, but retired to Devon in 1890.

Frances 'Fanny' Milton TROLLOPE (1779–1863), novelist who wrote as Mrs Trollope or Mrs Frances Trollope. Wife of Thomas Adolphus Trollope (1810-1892). Lived at 10 Cliff Terrace. Portrait by the French artist Auguste Hervieu (1794-1858).

* Her controversial book, Domestic Manners of the Americans (1832), created a sensation on both sides of the Atlantic.  It has been described as ‘an anglocentric rant’.

Phipps TURNBULL OBE TD ARIBA FRTPI (1916-1997). Devon County Planning Officer. He lived at ‘Lindenwood’ on West Hill Lane.  

* He was instrumental in the designation of East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1963.

* In retirement he was Chairman of the Otter Valley Association, founded in 1979. 

* He was buried alongside his wife Griselda, née Thoms, in All Saints’ churchyard, East Budleigh.
