"More Than The Game" Art Exhibition by Phil Airoldi

Both Cape Cod and East Devon, each with their own uniquely beautiful landscapes, have attracted hundreds of artists, both amateur and professional, over the centuries.
Phil Airoldi, who lives in Brewster, is one of those artists with a passion for the Cape Cod countryside and the outdoors which he conveys through his paintings.
“I often paint what I call the ‘Hidden Cape’, little pieces of Cape Cod that have a cozy personal feeling – a backyard, an opening on the bike path, a lazy stream through the woods.” Above: "Catching the action. Eldredge Park, Orleans. Pastel
Baseball as a source of inspiration may seem unlikely for such a painter, but as a human experience Phil Airoldi finds it as powerful as any landscape.

He is currently exhibiting at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth over 40 pastel and acrylic paintings that depict the unique world of the Cape Cod Baseball League. The show, called "More Than The Game" has taken nearly five years to produce.

“I love baseball,” he explains, “and there is no better or purer example of the game than the Cape Cod Baseball League – a summer league for college all-stars. While feeling the cool Cape Cod breezes and warmth of the fading sun, watching the interaction of the players and fans, and inhaling the aroma of freshly popped popcorn at a Brewster Whitecaps game, it occurred to me that there was nothing better. If I really wanted to paint what moved me, what I loved, this was it.”

In much the same way that some of his work reflects the intimacy of the Cape Cod landscape so his Cape League paintings describe intimate settings with interaction among a few people, be they players, fans or volunteers. “Light is always an important issue in my work whether it is a sunrise over a hazy marsh or the fading evening light warming the fans at a Cape League baseball game.”

Phil Airoldi studied art at the University of Massachusetts and Westfield State College.
He was an art teacher at Comprehensive High School in Chicopee, Massachusetts for 25 years and a guidance counsellor for seven until he retired in 2003. He has been a working artist for most of his life, exhibiting and showing his work since the mid ‘70s. His work can be found in many private collections across the country.

He is a member of the Cape Cod Art Association, The Creative Arts Center in Chatham, MA, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, and Nauset Painters.

“More Than The Game” runs until 21 June 2009. 10% of any sales are being donated to the Cape Cod Baseball League.

He is not listed on Budleigh Salterton’s War Memorial, yet his grave is in St Peter’s Burial Ground on Moor Lane. His family were not local, yet he seems to have been killed while engaged in the highly hazardous work of protecting Budleigh against invasion.   The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records him as a member of the 12 th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment with the Service Number was 5627659. According to the same source, his parents were George and M. Holloway, of Hounslow, Middlesex.   Tackling this WW2 project chronologically as I am, it was clear that Stanley had died on the same day as Private Clifto

People from the Past: 3. Reg Varney (1916-2008)

Reginald Alfred 'Reg' Varney was an English actor, most notable for his role as a cheerful Cockney bus driver in the 1970s TV sitcom On the Buses . For ten years he lived at Dark Lane House on picturesque Dark Lane in Budleigh Salterton, seen above.  Millions of television viewers remember him with affection. He has been described as belonging to the old school of comedians, with his dislike of much contemporary television and his pride in never using swear words to get a laugh. Varney was born on 11 July 1916 in Canning Town, which was then part of Essex but is now part of East London. His father worked in a rubber factory in Silvertown and he was one of five children who grew up in Addington Road, Canning Town. He was educated at the nearby Star Lane Primary School in West Ham and after leaving school at 14, he worked as a messenger boy at the Regent Palace Hotel, pictured above.

A home that Hatchard-Smith built: Lavender House

Lavender House, one of no less than 50 houses in Budleigh Salterton designed by Hatchard-Smith   Instantly recognisable with their red and white decoration and their front doors set within brick arches, the houses built by architect William Hatchard-Smith (1887-1987) are still sought after and appreciated by their owners for their elegance and comfort, their sturdy construction and their attention to practical detail. Plans for one of the houses designed by Hatchard-Smith Lavender House, on Moorlands Road , is a four-bedroomed detached family residence built by Hatchard-Smith in the late 1920s when it was originally named Lavenderhay.   Set within what are described as beautifully landscaped gardens of approximately an acre it has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment programme while retaining much of the original charm and character.
