Captains Course on sale

Auto dealerships are not the only place to get a great deal nowadays.

Captains Course is having a sale for Brewster residents with a one-time-only half-year membership available for $350. The membership would be good through March 31, 2010.

“Our financial problems at Captains Course are all because of loss of memberships,” selectman Ed Lewis observed. “I think this will be a good first step.”

Normally Brewster residents pay $700 for a full year membership. Non-residents pay $2,000. But with the economy slumping 176 residents have not renewed memberships this year.

At a special meeting Monday the Brewster Golf Commission adopted the half-year plan and introduced it to the selectmen that night. In a survey of non-renewing members about half cited the economy or noted they did not play enough.

Bob Weiss of the commission said that renewals were due in April, when the stock had just bottomed.

“401Ks were looking like 101Ks,” he observed. The Dow Jones is up 40 percent since then.

He was concerned the lost residents would not come back.

Any Brewster residents who purchased a full annual membership after July 20, can exchange that for the half-year rate and get a refund. That amounts to five people. Brewster residents, pro-rated to the balance for the half season rate, can also redeem 10-play discount cards.

Lewis was concerned about non-renewing non-residents as well.
“We lost 50 of those,” he noted. “I’m very concerned about those because they have other options.”

“I think there is sizeable interest in resetting the non-resident rate,” Weiss noted. “We are in the process of a more complete discussion of those ideas.”

Weiss said if five ex-members take the half-year plan the club would break even. If they can get 50 or 60 of the 176 to re-up they gain $22,000.

“The fiscal gain would be beyond this year,” said Director of Golf Mark O’Brien. “If they stay away too long it will be difficult to get them back.”

O’Brien’s contract was renewed for three years on Monday, by a 4-1 vote, with Greg Levasseur dissenting.

His family were not local, yet he seems to have been killed while engaged in the highly hazardous work of protecting Budleigh against invasion.   The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records him as a member of the 12 th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment with the Service Number was 5627659. According to the same source, his parents were George and M. Holloway, of Hounslow, Middlesex.   Tackling this WW2 project chronologically as I am, it was clear that Stanley had died on the same day as Private Clifto

People from the Past: 3. Reg Varney (1916-2008)

Reginald Alfred 'Reg' Varney was an English actor, most notable for his role as a cheerful Cockney bus driver in the 1970s TV sitcom On the Buses . For ten years he lived at Dark Lane House on picturesque Dark Lane in Budleigh Salterton, seen above.  Millions of television viewers remember him with affection. He has been described as belonging to the old school of comedians, with his dislike of much contemporary television and his pride in never using swear words to get a laugh. Varney was born on 11 July 1916 in Canning Town, which was then part of Essex but is now part of East London. His father worked in a rubber factory in Silvertown and he was one of five children who grew up in Addington Road, Canning Town. He was educated at the nearby Star Lane Primary School in West Ham and after leaving school at 14, he worked as a messenger boy at the Regent Palace Hotel, pictured above.
