The grave of Harry Goulty in St Peter's Burial Ground, Moor Lane, Budleigh Salterton 

Harry Goulty is not listed on Budleigh Salterton’s War Memorial, and had no apparent family connections in the town. However, parish records indicate that he was living at ‘Holly Bank’ at 1 Sherbrook Hill, off West Hill in Budleigh, at the time of his death.  This would account for his last resting place in St Peter’s Burial Ground, Budleigh Salterton, where his grave is number 530, in Block E, Row 12. 

Incidentally, the parish records copy at Fairlynch Museum also indicate the date of his death as 24 October 1940, rather than 20 October, which is the date on the headstone and as recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

We do have a record from the Forces War Records website stating that he was born on 14 September 1898 in Canning Town, London – birthplace incidentally of actor and former Budleigh resident Reg Varney – but the indications are that he moved from London to Northampton, where he enlisted in the Northamptonshire Regiment. His Service Number was 5876089.

The Forces War Records website also makes reference to his service in WW1, which would be likely in view of his age.

At the time of his death, according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, he was serving in the 9th Battalion of The Buffs, also known as the Royal East Kent Regiment. This particular battalion had been formed in July 1940 from a cadre - a group of instructors - in the Northamptonshire Regiment.

None of this explains why Harry was living in Budleigh. Kelly’s Directory for 1939 lists a Mrs McCabe as a resident of ‘Holly Bank’. Researchers on the Devon Heritage website, where his surname is misspelt, were evidently unable to discover the circumstances of his death, with the comment ‘Nothing more yet confirmed.’

These ‘orphans’ are listed on Budleigh Salterton War 

Memorial, but have not been identified. Their first names, 

date of death and service numbers are not known. 

They are recorded on the Devon Heritage website as 

'Not yet confirmed’

He is not listed on Budleigh Salterton’s War Memorial, yet his grave is in St Peter’s Burial Ground on Moor Lane. His family were not local, yet he seems to have been killed while engaged in the highly hazardous work of protecting Budleigh against invasion.   The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records him as a member of the 12 th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment with the Service Number was 5627659. According to the same source, his parents were George and M. Holloway, of Hounslow, Middlesex.   Tackling this WW2 project chronologically as I am, it was clear that Stanley had died on the same day as Private Clifto

People from the Past: 3. Reg Varney (1916-2008)

Reginald Alfred 'Reg' Varney was an English actor, most notable for his role as a cheerful Cockney bus driver in the 1970s TV sitcom On the Buses . For ten years he lived at Dark Lane House on picturesque Dark Lane in Budleigh Salterton, seen above.  Millions of television viewers remember him with affection. He has been described as belonging to the old school of comedians, with his dislike of much contemporary television and his pride in never using swear words to get a laugh. Varney was born on 11 July 1916 in Canning Town, which was then part of Essex but is now part of East London. His father worked in a rubber factory in Silvertown and he was one of five children who grew up in Addington Road, Canning Town. He was educated at the nearby Star Lane Primary School in West Ham and after leaving school at 14, he worked as a messenger boy at the Regent Palace Hotel, pictured above.

A home that Hatchard-Smith built: Lavender House

Lavender House, one of no less than 50 houses in Budleigh Salterton designed by Hatchard-Smith   Instantly recognisable with their red and white decoration and their front doors set within brick arches, the houses built by architect William Hatchard-Smith (1887-1987) are still sought after and appreciated by their owners for their elegance and comfort, their sturdy construction and their attention to practical detail.
